Michele McCain – the only member of the cast to have been in the original Broadway production – is absolutely marvellous, the star of the show… name the superlative and it fits her to a tee.
The favorite was Michele McCain, a big-busted, broad-bottomed gal who wore that pink flower in her hair, and who can belt out songs with a brass edge like “Cash for your trash” or do a soft number with Clent Bowers, “Honeysuckle Rose,” that comes out like pure honey. She is an original member of the Broadway cast.
But, the ring a ding dazzling – at least in Act one (which was all I could see and still meet my copy deadline) – was done by Michele McCain. Here, friends, is a blues, bop and boom boom belter of immense ability.
Michele McCain in a deliciously outrageous “Find Out What They Like.” Miss McCain is something else. Her voice could raise the rafters at a gospel sing, and she’s as uninhibited as they come. At every possible occasion, she shakes everything she’s got, and she’s got a lot to shake. An excellent actress and song stylest who made her Broadway debut in “Aint Misbehavin’,” she delivers beautifully on “I’ve Got a Feeling I’m Falling” and “Mean to Me”.
Michele McCain is a saucy player with a trumpet of a voice. There is no way of getting around this… She uses her bosom (gasp, will it stay in her dress?) as subtly as a slop upside the head with a bat.
Miss McCain’s brassy style makes tunes like “Cash for Your Trash” red hot, although she’s murder when finesse is in order.
Miss McCain started as a trembling beginner and then knocked’em dead with another war ditty, “Cash for Your Trash” (which was rife with double entendres). All the voices were excellent, but Miss McCain’s was stunning. Powerful and versatile, it sounded like a little girl’s one moment and a red bot mammas’s the next.
Michele Mccain especially sinks her whole body and soul into her character, an especially notable achievement since that character is defined only as a singer.
